My Word of the Year for 2019

Happy New Year! For the past two years, I’ve chosen a few words to set the tone for the next 365 days. For example, 2018 was all about creativity and presence. In 2017, I channeled challenge and adventure. This year, I’ve narrowed it down to one word and one word only.

Authenticity

While I’m a big believer that less is more, this year’s quest for authenticity cuts in two different ways.
For starters, while Instagram and social media in general used to put perfection on a pedestal, there’s an apparent shift to pull back the curtain more — to show people that life isn’t perfect, no matter what one’s feed may indicate. That’s not to say those who look like they have it all are being disingenuous, but that there’s always more than one layer to a person’s life. I would love to talk to you more about my every day life, my growing pains, my career and whatever else you’d like to know about! Have an idea for a post or a question you’d like to ask me? Leave a comment below, email at jen@skirttherulesblog.com or DM me on Instagram at @skirttherules_.

Aside from being more authentic online, I also want to continue feel more true to who I am. The beauty of getting older is that it’s easier to differentiate what I like and dislike. But there are still times when I find myself wondering why bought something that I never ended up wearing or went to an event that I didn’t have any fun at. Did I do it because I thought it would bring me joy or because I was doing it for the ‘gram? Did I think it would make for a great experience or was it because of FOMO? These are filters I want to be better at asking myself before I pull any triggers and save myself the time/money/effort of something doesn’t really feel true to who I am.

If you had to choose a word to focus on this year, what would it be and why? Let me know in the comments below!

That is a great word for the year and great questions to ask yourself. My goal is to ask myself the same questions as well. Sometimes it is hard to differentiate if something would bring me joy unless I do it/try it out. Looking forward to your 2019 posts Jen. Happy New Year!

I agree – life is one big trial and error. But I’m getting better and better at predicting what will bring me joy or not. Happy new year, Rach!

  2. I love this idea! My coworker once told me she chose the word “fearless” for her word of the year, which I really love. This year, I’m choosing to embrace “courage” – in all forms of how that can be manifested. Happy New Year!

I love the word you chose! My favorite quote about courage is: “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.”
