The Secret to Taking Blog Photos in the Winter

There was a time (aka the past four years) when I would brave the cold, drag James outside and take blog photos in the dead of winter. This was all well and good if I was trying to feature my puffer coat in every outfit, but then you’d probably stop following me, right? It’s okay to be honest. These days, I’m less inclined to grin and bear it in below freezing temps. Instead, I’ve employed a few strategies to keep the blog content coming throughout the season.

1. Travel somewhere warm and stock up on photos.
Over the holidays, James and I traveled back to the west coast to visit family. Even though we were there for a little over a week, I must have packed at least 15 different outfits. Over the course of a few days, we took batches of outfit photos (like this one, this one and this one). Not the ideal way to spend part of our holiday vacation, but it’s much more appealing than trying to battle the brutal temps back on the east coast. By the time we got back to NYC, we had enough content to last a few weeks and give us a break for the first few weekends in January.

2. Find indoor spaces with lots of windows and natural light.
Sadly, I have since then depleted our reserve of outfit photos and have no immediate plans to go somewhere warm soon (wah!). Still in no mood to shoot in the winter weather, we’ve been visiting indoor locations that have plenty of natural lighting. In NYC, there’s Brookfield Place (like this outfit) and the conservatory at Brooklyn Botanic Garden and New York Botanic Garden. We still get gorgeous lighting, but are shielded from the cold.

All things considered, it’s been a pretty mild winter so far, but I’d much rather take outfit photos in temperature controlled venues for now. To my blogger friends out there: how are you keeping up with content throughout winter? Are you braving the cold? If so, kudos to you!

I usually suffer in the cold hehe but sometimes it gets to be too much. I wish I could travel more often and even when I do, I have no one to take photos for me so i always get sad about that. I need to try inside of Brookfield Place!

  9. Here in California winter is pretty mild (sometimes even sunny), so my problem with shooting is having too much sun and getting overexposed pics, haha. But I absolutely hate shooting in the cold too! Love the tip about shooting indoors.
