Earlier in March, I celebrated seven years of blogging and when I think about how much I’ve done for and with this blog, I wonder how much longer I’ll keep it going.

Skirt The Rules has been a hobby turned side hustle that sort of turned back into a hobby once I landed my current full-time job. I’m not going to lie, most days — especially after a long day of work — I just don’t feel like blogging. And in case you don’t notice, those are typically the days where you see me with a half-assed post about what I wore and why you should buy it too.

Now that I’m in my early thirties, it feels kind of silly to talk so superficially about outfits and shopping and clothing. I mean, yes that’s how I make some extra spending money, but it’s not what really gets me going. I recently read this post by my blogger friend Alissa of The Adored Life (disclaimer: I’ve never met her in real life, but in my head we’re friends!) challenging bloggers to be the content you want to see in the world. And that’s when I realized I’ve been half-assing my posts because it really isn’t the content I care about.

Lately, it’s been feeling like a one-way conversation and guys — it’s kind of lonely. Whenever I spend time responding to Instagram comments that say “Pretty dress!” or “I love your style!” with “Omg, you’re the sweetest!” and “Thanks love!” I feel like a little bit of me dies inside. How incredibly unfulfilling. And it’s no wonder that blogging just hasn’t been as exciting for me for the past few years.

Of course, I still love fashion. I still love experimenting with my personal style and I especially love helping you to discover yours. I know lots of my followers come here to see what I’m wearing. But what has always been my favorite part about blogging is sharing tidbits about my life — things I’ve learned at work, in love and in life. So I think I’m going to get back to that . It’s not as easy to write as a post that says “Here’s my outfit, isn’t it cute?” but it sure is going to be more fulfilling!

If there’s something you’d like me to talk about on the blog (career advice, travel tips, New York City guides, behind the scenes with blogging), let me know in the comments section or shoot me an email at jen@skirttherulesblog.com. I can’t wait to see what questions or topics you come up with!

I totally feel you! My blog has always been a hobby but lately it hasn’t been exciting and I post lame stuff that no one cares about. I love the personal stuff! Here are some things I’d love to know: how did you know you didn’t want to practice law? If you could live anywhere, where would you live? Do you have any secret talents or talents you wish you had? Have a great weekend!

I’ve sort of been feeling the same way when it comes to blogging – nothing feels genuine anymore and I never seem to know what to write about. I like the advice that we should be the content we want to see. I may have to do a bit of brainstorming with myself on what exactly I want to read.
By the way, I love your dress! 😀

    Hello,

I’m a blogger too but not a fashion blogger. I talk a lot about things like life issues and the way I face them.

I think we have to do what makes us happy.

I think it’s fine to create content that really reflects who we are.

    Have a nice week.
