As I wrote last week, I want to do a better job about talking about things that are on my mind or going on in my life. So on that note, I’m putting something very exciting, but still far from official out in the world.

We’re buying an apartment! Or at least, we’re in the process of it right now. The contract is signed, but now we’re securing our mortgage loan and – because it’s a co-op building – we’ll need to get board approval.

I’ll share more details on the apartment once it’s officially official (like where, how big, why we fell in love with the building and the area at first sight, etc.), but for now, I’m going to keep mum for fear of jinxing things. This is our first time buying a home and it’s been an exciting, terrifying, thrilling rollercoaster of emotions.

I feel like people tend to not share these kinds of announcements until it’s official, but I thought I’d take you along for the ride of trying to be new homeowners. More to come in the next few weeks and months – I really really can’t wait to share!

Are you a homeowner? If so, please please please leave your tips on what you wish you knew the first time you ever bought a house!

How exciting! Congrats! We’re coming up on our one-year anniversary in our first house in a couple of weeks! My biggest piece of advice is to live with the place before you start buying a ton of furniture or making large changes. You’ll want to see how you interact with it and where things will realistically go. (That and house things cost a lot of money. Haha.)

Congrats!! So exciting!! I am a homeowner and bought a condo a few years ago. The best advice I have is when you move in, dedicate a whole weekend (even a week) to getting settled. Don’t make any plans. You will feel so relieved when you have everything all unpacked. It is frustrating trying to look for stuff and figuring out where everything (and furniture to buy) when things are half packed.

  3. Definitely talk to your bank/brokerage to see if there are ways to decrease the interest rate (outside of buying down the points)! There are clever ways to achieve this without spending extra money – so it doesn’t hurt to ask!

Congrats! I have never bought a home, though last year it was on the table and I kind of enjoyed seeing all the homes. It sort of would make me afraid to commit, always worrying if something better might pop up on the market!
