Why I’m Blowing Off NYFW This Season

Twice a year, your favorite fashion bloggers all jet over to NYC to blow your Instagram and Snapchat feeds up with runway shows and after parties. Anyone else kind of over it?

This season, I’m blowing off NYFW completely. Like, I actually forgot that it was starting this week. I know, I’m a terrible fashion blogger, especially considering that I live in NYC and am only a 15-minute cab ride from all of the action. I think about how excited I used to be to attend show and go to networking events and I wonder if I’ve become a little cynical about it all. Or maybe it’s just the winter blues? Here are a few reasons why you won’t be seeing any NYFW content from me this season:

1. It’s not a priority right now. I landed a new gig a few weeks ago and as anyone who has ever started a new job can attest, it takes a lot of time and effort during the learning period. And I’m okay with that – in fact, I’m obsessed with it. I spend all day absorbing new information and learning a completely new-to-me industry. And that means skipping out on NYFW to focus on getting adjusted (and creating a career-focused series for you!).

2. It’s kind of a scene. My blogger friends know… NYFW can feel like a cross between a marathon and a parade. We’re running around from shows to events to parties, all for the perfect Instagram shot or Snapchat story. And then there are outfit changes on outfit changes. On the plus side, there’s usually lots of champagne involved.

3. I’m not even sure if readers care about NYFW. I’m going to throw this one out to all of you (and who knows, maybe you’ll prove me wrong!) – are you interested in what goes on at NYFW? I’ll admit, there are definitely a few shows that I love to look at every season (i.e. J.Crew, Kate Spade), but that’s because they’re not high end designers. A lot NYFW shows are beautiful, but will I ever own that silk gown that took 100 hours to hand embroidered? Probably not (unless I win the lottery). I’m looking for fashion that’s more relatable and wearable and a lot of that is found outside of NYFW.

So what do you think? Am I totally lame for not participating in Fashion Week this season? I’d love to hear your thoughts! Who knows, maybe I might be singing a completely different tune in September!

I totally support your decision to blow off fashion week! I love looking at all of the photos of like you said J Crew, Kate Spade, and the like…but everything else that I see I’m just like…I could never in my life wear that!

I feel you girl. I personally am interested in the shows like J. Crew and Kate Spade too, and am not at all interested in anything else!

I def don’t see the hype of fashion week. Esp after seeing every show on bloggers’ feeds and snapchat stories, its lost its appeal and like you said I want things I can actually wear let alone afford.
