Most couples are starting to think about Valentine’s Day plans, but thankfully for me and James, our tradition is a pretty simple one.

There was a time when we would book a fancy dinner at a fancy restaurant on the night of February 14. And so did everyone else and their mother. That meant battling with overcrowded seating and coughing up extra cash for a price gauged, subpar pre-fixe menu. The tradition went on for 6 or 7 years until we realized that we were grossly overthinking and overpaying our plans.

If you read about my approach to New Year’s Eve, then you know that I’m not a big fan of overhyped holidays (I’m looking at you, Halloween). The night turns out so much better when you ignore the pressures to have the “Best <Insert Holiday> Ever” and plan something that’s just for you, not your Instagram feed or Facebook status.

Each year, we do a little date night switcheroo. On February 13, I’ll usually treat James to dinner at a restaurant we’ve never tried before. On February 14, James treats me a home cooked meal (which includes grocery shopping, food prep and dish washing!). It’s the best of both worlds: we get to indulge a bit, while avoiding the craziness of the actual holiday.
