Some people embrace the new year with resolutions. Others adopt a single word to carry them through the year. I’ve decided to do both.

Skirt The Rules / Lou & Grey Activewear

Earlier this week, I shared my major goals for the year and how I plan to not break them. But somewhere in between my aspirations to complete a 30-day yoga challenge and produce a new travel video once a month, there are two words that help quell all my self-doubt and fuel of my ambitions. I have a feeling they’re going to be key themes in 2017.

#1: Challenge
Most people are creatures of comfort. There’s safety in predictability and risk in the unknown. And while resistance is typically not preferred, it turns out it’s actually a force that helps us grow and become stronger. One of my favorite spin instructors in NYC ended a class with this phrase: If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you. He said it all throughout class to help overcome the mental blocks and push our physical limits. You know what happened at the end? I felt like a much stronger, albeit sweaty and exhausted, person. So this year, I’m embracing challenges in an effort to always keep improving.

#2: Adventure
This one has a much more fun connotation, but the two basically go hand in hand. The similar thing about adventure is that it’s full of unknowns, which means new experiences and hopefully incredible memories. This year, I plan to make room for more adventures. Excuses like “I’m too busy/tired” or “I’d rather stay at home and watch TV” just aren’t going to fly anymore. I want to explore every nook and cranny of NYC, travel to more cities around the country and fall in love with even more places around the world. I want to go on a spontaneous outing or try a new restaurant in a neighborhood that I’ve never been to. And it all starts with saying yes to adventure.

Do you have a word or words that you’re embracing for 2017? I would love to hear them!

How Not to Break Your New Year’s Resolutions http://skirttherulesblog.com/2017/01/03/not-break-new-years-resolutions/ http://skirttherulesblog.com/2017/01/03/not-break-new-years-resolutions/#comments Tue, 03 Jan 2017 10:00:37 +0000 http://skirttherulesblog.com/?p=14609 Blue & Purple Abstract Print Leggings

New Year, New Me! That’s how I feel at the beginning of every year, because January 1 is like a blank slate – a chance to start fresh, dream big and commit to something. The sky’s the limit, am I right? But ask me how I’m doing a few months into the year and you might hear me sing a different tune … New Year’s Reso-what? This year, one of my New Year’s Resolutions is to not break my New Year’s Resolutions (so meta, I know). If you’re in the same boat, I’m sharing a few tips on how to stay on track, whether you’re on Day 1 or Day 365.

1. Set reasonable goals.
There’s something about the New Year that makes us feel overly ambitious, especially when it comes to setting goals for ourselves. Sure, it’s full of good intent, but it can also be the reason behind a lot of broken resolutions. Instead, take things one step at a time. This might mean setting a goal for the next month, instead of the entire year. Or resolving to work out 3-4 times a week, instead of aiming to lose 30 pounds. When you break it down, your aspirations seem way more achievable and you become much more motivated to work towards them.

2. Share it with friends and family.
Now that you’ve got your resolutions resolved, who’s going to keep you accountable to them? By sharing your goals with friends and family, you create an instant support system that will cheer you on and keep you honest. Who knows, you might even inspire someone to join the journey with you – gym buddies, anyone? I usually share my resolutions on my blog (coming soon!), which also allows me to go back and reference them later in the year.

3. But do it for yourself.
Whether you resolve to feel healthier, be more active or learn more, you’re the one that has everything to gain from your goals. Not your parents, not your significant other and definitely not your exes. If you find yourself a few months into the year and struggling to keep up, don’t forget why you made the resolutions in the first place. You did it for you!

Stepping Up My Workout Gear http://skirttherulesblog.com/2016/09/22/stepping-up-my-workout-gear/ http://skirttherulesblog.com/2016/09/22/stepping-up-my-workout-gear/#comments Thu, 22 Sep 2016 09:00:24 +0000 http://skirttherulesblog.com/?p=13963 Workout Outfit / Lou & Grey Printed Leggings

You know that feeling when you’re working out and see yourself from behind in a mirror … only to realize that your leggings are completely see through?

That’s what happens when you snatch up cheaply made leggings thinking it’s a good deal (I’m looking at you, Forever 21!). Since experiencing that fitness faux paux, I’ve said goodbye to semi-transparent spandex and opted for higher quality workout gear.

But I’m not even saying you should shell out your life savings for a pair of Lululemon leggings. They’re a great brand, but there are plenty of other quality activewear lines at really reasonable price points.

My current obsession: Lou & Grey Active (also available here). My crop top and printed leggings are both part of the line and the super affordable, super cozy brand just released a new collection for fall. Sadly, these leggings are already sold out, but there are plenty of others to choose from (like this gray abstract print pair).

There’s just something about brand new workout gear that just makes sprint a little faster and hustle a little harder. It makes me feel a little more confident and a whole lot stronger. Anyone else get that feeling?
