I’m going to put it out there right now — I’m the worst when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. I cringe at the thought of looking back at last year’s list because I’m pretty sure I didn’t achieve a majority of my goals (even after I wrote about how not to break them). This year, I’m doing away with the construct of resolutions and sharing the things I’m looking forward to in 2018. I’m hoping that by re-framing my goals that it’ll seem less like a to-do list and more like things that are already going to happen.

1. More travel.

Last year brought along a new job with some major perks. In 2017, I hopped on a total of 72 flights! We criss-crossed around the continent to places like Miami, San Juan, Washington D.C., Austin, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Tulum. along with lots of visits home to Phoenix and San Diego. We went abroad for our second time in London and our first times in the south of France, Ireland and Northern Ireland. It’s going to be a hard year to beat, but I’m ready for it! We’re actually going to Australia in two weeks and have plans for Cuba and hopefully Spain later this year. We’ve got a lot of places on my list before we start a family, so you better believe we’re crossing off some new destinations this year!

2. A more curated wardrobe.

Earlier this year, I mentioned how the color palette of my closet is shifting. My personal style is constantly changing and right now, it’s really being driven by a desire for more neutral colors and quality pieces. Hopefully after scrolling through my Instagram feed, you’ll notice the difference. I’m trying to be more thoughtful in everything I bring home, especially since I don’t have much place to store things anyway. Instead of chasing the latest trends, I’m looking for pieces I’ve always needed and will always wear. Case in point: these black leather booties. They’re fashionable and functional and will definitely come in handy for years to come. I’m hoping to invest in more things that will stand the test of time and let go of everything else that’s just taking up space in my tiny little NYC closet.

3. More substantive content on the blog.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that things have been a little quiet around the blog. I think part of the reason has been all of the focus I’ve been putting into my full-time job over the past year left me feeling exhausted by the end of the day. It’s more demanding than any role I’ve ever had in my professional career and I’m still trying to understand how to balance that. But another big reason is that I’ve been feeling really uninspired about blogging. Do you really want to know about “the perfect dress for wedding season” or do you want hear about things like finding a new job, dealing with work-life balance, or making friends in a completely new city?

Of course, I love putting together outfits and editing photos. Where I get stuck is writing the content to go along with it. There’s something unsatisfying about writing about pairing a turtleneck sweater with a cream puffer vest. Of course, I love sharing amazing styles and sales with you and I obviously make commission if you purchase something through my links, but I have other experiences that I can share that I think could inspire you in some way and reinvigorate my love for blogging. So bear with me as I strike the right balance between with my content. And if there’s anything you want to hear from me about, let me know in the comments section below!!

A Shift in My Wardrobe Color Pallette http://skirttherulesblog.com/2017/09/06/shift-wardrobe-color-pallette/ http://skirttherulesblog.com/2017/09/06/shift-wardrobe-color-pallette/#comments Wed, 06 Sep 2017 09:00:11 +0000 http://skirttherulesblog.com/?p=15379 Neutral Style Inspiration: Blush Wrap Bodysuit and White Midi Skirt

When I first started blogging and discovering my personal style, I was all about mixed prints and pops of color (case in point: my very first #OOTD). Fast forward six years and I’m beginning to think that my perspective has started to shift into neutral territory. Literally.

Recently, while getting dressed every day, I started to feel like I had nothing to wear even though my closet was brimming with cute, colorful clothes. Champagne problems, I know, but it was a pretty frustrating feeling. How was it possible that I had so much clothes, but never felt like I could effortlessly put together an outfit? I started to wonder whether I was outgrowing my style.

I constantly go through my closet, pulling things to donate or sell. Most of the time it’s easy, but sometimes there’ll be something I just can’t get rid of quite yet — like a bright yellow floral top that’s just too cute or a bright red midi skirt that I might want to wear during the holidays. Meanwhile, I find myself constantly gravitating toward the same simple blouses, a pair of fluid pants and an easy black dress week after week. My mind is saying one thing, but my style is saying something else.

If you take a look at my Instagram feed lately, you’ll start to notice a pattern in my preferred color palette and you’ll see that it began as recently as a month ago. Pale pinks, light blues, camel, white, black and navy. They’re what I consider my neutrals and I think the sooner that I realize that my style has truly shifted, the sooner I can curate my closet and get back to creating outfits that come more effortlessly. Have you seen your style transform? I would love to hear how you adapted over time!

Can You Still Wear White After Labor Day? http://skirttherulesblog.com/2017/09/05/can-still-wear-white-labor-day/ http://skirttherulesblog.com/2017/09/05/can-still-wear-white-labor-day/#comments Tue, 05 Sep 2017 09:00:50 +0000 http://skirttherulesblog.com/?p=15375 Summer Style Inspiration: Black & White Print Tie Front Slip Dress

All your favorite bloggers probably started wearing fall clothes over a month ago (around the time of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale). As much as I love what they wear, I wouldn’t really use them as a gauge of what’s seasonally appropriate to wear right here, right now. Like you, I’m a normal person that prefers to dress according to the current forecast (instead of trying to sell you something that you’ll wear in two months). So here’s a question for you: can you still wear white after Labor day?

Summer Style Inspiration: Black & White Print Tie Front Slip Dress

The answer is a resounding YES! I’m the kind of person that is all for wearing whatever makes you feel comfortable. So if you’re a blogger wearing a suede jacket in 100°F weather for the ‘gram, by all means! But for real, don’t be pressured into dressing for fall just because pumpkin spice lattes are back. Depending on where you live, it might feel like summer for another solid month after Labor Day or maybe it really does feel like fall. Just know that you don’t have to tuck away those white summer dresses just yet!
