You might have noticed that’s it been a little quiet around here these days. I’m trying to create more thoughtful content on the blog, but also my day job has been taking up a lot of my focus and energy. Many of you know that I work for an airline. Well we’ve just come out of four different hurricanes all back-to-back-to-back. During this time, it’s all hands on deck and everyone works around the clock through late nights and weekends, to get the operation back up a running and take care of everyone who has been devastated by the storms. Stressed has been my baseline for the past month, so I figured I’d tackle it here on the blog and share my tips on how to not let it get the best of you.

Office Style: Black Short Sleeve Dress

1. Confide in your work BFF.
If you think about it – with the exception of a significant other – you probably spend more time with your co-workers than anyone else. And no one knows you like a work bestie. Because they’re familiar with what you’re dealing with on a daily basis, they’re better equipped to empathize with your stressors and might even be able to give you advice to address the issues head on.

2. Go for a walk.
As simple as it seems, physically removing yourself from the center of your stress can serve as a mini-reset for the mind. When I’m feeling overwhelmed or in a rut, I pause the task at hand and go for a walk. Usually I’ll try and go outside for some fresh air or eat lunch with a co-worker away from our desks. When I’m in a time crunch, I’ll still take five minutes and take a lap around the hallway (usually to the vending machine, but that’s a whole different coping mechanism). It’s enough time for my mind to wander somewhere else and get the blood flowing.

What to Wear to Work

3. Recognize a colleague.
At my company, we have a online social platform where we can send each other “kudos” of sorts – recognizing colleagues for going above and beyond. Even if your company is a little more analogue, it’s just as easy to leave a sticky note or a thank you card for someone who has helped you out through the tough times. Recognizing someone else is a great reminder that we’re all in this together. If you’re stressed, your co-worker is probably feeling the same. We’re all working towards the same goals, so why not share a little thanks and positivity? Plus, uplifting each other is just plain good for the soul.

4. Remember why you’re there.
Sometimes, it’s easy to get caught up in the negative aspects about work – especially during crunch time. Ugh, I have to stay late another night. Ugh, I have to work on the weekend. Ugh, all of these projects are driving me certifiably insane! But instead of giving up or going on a rant, why not think about why you’re there in the first place? At some point, you wanted this job – and if you’re lucky enough, this is your dream job. Here’s the thing thought – dream jobs aren’t always a dream. There will be times where you have crazy hours and overwhelming projects, but underneath it all there should be a simple, single purpose – the reason why you wanted this job in the first place. Remind yourself of that and maybe you’ll get through your day with a little more clarity. I know I do!

Why You Can Never Go Wrong with a Printed Top http://skirttherulesblog.com/2017/01/26/printed-off-shoulder-top/ http://skirttherulesblog.com/2017/01/26/printed-off-shoulder-top/#comments Thu, 26 Jan 2017 10:00:46 +0000 http://skirttherulesblog.com/?p=14689 Skirt The Rules / Off the Shoulder Printed Top & White Jeans

Having a closet full of basic staples is fundamental, but having one full of printed top is just way more fun.

While I’ll be focusing a lot of my sartorial efforts (and $) on a new work wardrobe for my new job, there’s nothing like slipping into something a little more fun while off duty. Plus, there’s a reason why you can never go wrong with a printed top. It always makes for a conversation starter and/or a compliment magnet. It literally does all of the talking, which means I don’t have to think too hard with the rest of my outfit. Looking put together, minus the effort – that’s just how I roll.

My New Job & How It’s Going to Change My Blog http://skirttherulesblog.com/2017/01/23/stylish-work-outfit-2/ http://skirttherulesblog.com/2017/01/23/stylish-work-outfit-2/#comments Mon, 23 Jan 2017 10:00:51 +0000 http://skirttherulesblog.com/?p=14672 Skirt The Rules / How to Wear a Sleeveless Top at Work

A few weeks ago, I kicked off the new year with new resolutions and plans to start a new job. Well, I finally started last week (!!!) and I wanted to celebrate by sharing a few details about the new gig and what that will mean for the blog.

I’m so unbelievably excited to share that I’m now a Corporate Communications Manager at JetBlue! I’ll be supporting internal communications for the company’s People Team (aka HR/talent/culture). It’ll be a new adventure to say the least and I have a feeling that it’s going to shape the future of my blog in a major way.

There will obviously be a lot more travel in store for 2017, but I also want to focus on an even more important journey. The professional one. For those of you who know me, you know that my career path has been anything but conventional. I graduated from law school, passed the bar but didn’t want to practice law, moved to NYC without a job, hated my first non-lawyer job thanks to a crazy boss, worked at a fashion brand for three years and now I’m here.

For our generation, professional growth is anything but linear and as a community, we should support each other in all of our own unique journeys. That’s why I’m starting a career-focused series here on the blog. Every Monday, I’ll be sharing my own experiences or perspectives on putting together a resume, nailing an interview, landing a dream job, and pursuing your passions.

Do you have any specific career-related questions that you’d like to see me tackle? Let me know in the comments section or shoot me an email at jen@skirttherulesblog.com.
