The Feeling of First Snow in NYC

I’ve lived in New York for more than five years now and I still haven’t gotten over that feeling when the first snow of the season rolls around.

What to Wear in the Winter in NYC

It’s strange really. I spent all fall dreading the thought of winter rolling around and then one Saturday morning, I wake up to see snow falling outside my bedroom and my whole perspective changes. It’s magical! Winter is the best! Snow is gorgeous! It’s cognitive dissonance at its finest.

It’s a fleeting feeling for sure, but if you want to recreate the magic, I suggest you avoid Central Park and go to a small neighborhood park where the snow hasn’t been melted by rock salt, shoveled away, or trampled on by others. It was already 2:30 PM by the time I managed to throw on a snow day outfit and this quiet little park down the street from our apartment was relatively untouched! Granted, not a lot of people are crazy enough to stand outside in freezing weather with snow coming down pretty heavily (let alone sans jacket to take photos).

Of course, the magic and wonder is all relative. I haven’t seen snow in well over nine months, but come January and February, I’ll probably say I’m ready to never see it again. Until then, you can catch me outside skipping around in my Hunter rain boots (I’m wear the packable version, which is much more flexible!), a puffer vest and all of the pom pom beanies.

Getting photos in the snow while it’s still all perfect – especially the first snow – always does feel magical. It’s like, that fleeting moment when you love winter before you get too cold.
